In Loving Memory of Marcia Okerlund
A Rescue Angel, Mentor, and Friend
Marcia Okerlund was, and will always be, a cornerstone of Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue. For decades, she stood at the heart of our mission, pouring her compassion for animals and relentless determination into saving dogs who had nowhere else to turn. Thousands of lives were changed because Marcia refused to give up, because she believed every dog deserves a chance. Marcia fostered countless dogs in her home, guided many, many more into loving families, and never stopped helping even in her final days. Moms and puppies were especially dear to her heart. She was present for innumerable births, a calm, watchful midwife who sometimes even slept on the shelter floor just so she could be there if help was needed. Being there for the dogs, any time, was like second nature for her. She inspired those around her to do more, care deeper, and to remember that while we may never be able to save every dog, we are able to change the whole world for the dogs that find their way to NCCR.
We take comfort in believing that Marcia is now surrounded by the countless dogs who went before her, a joyful, overwhelming welcome from lives she saved, nurtured, and loved. Her legacy lives on in every dog who finds safety through NCCR, and her lasting impact is immeasurable. We are forever grateful to have walked this path with her, and we will carry her spirit forward as we continue the work she loved so deeply.
